Ceramics…no wheel required.

Ceramics…no wheel required.

You may be asking yourself, how is this possible? One word…handbuilding.

Handbuilding is like wheel throwing’s ugly stepsister… except it’s been around much longer. It’s the oldest ancient form of pottery, dating all the way back to 10,000 BC! It has stood the test of time.

For those of you who are not familiar…handbuilding is the process of creating pottery using only your hands and simple tools rather than a pottery wheel. With this technique you can achieve unique structures that are impossible to create on the wheel.

Without the need for an expensive wheel…the barrier for entry is low.

Making ceramics accessible to anyone, anywhere. No more excuses...if you have a table and two hands you can be a ceramicist.

This is exactly why I chose handbuilding. I had minimal space and minimal money, but a desire to learn ceramics. I wasn’t sure it was possible. Not to mention I had a toddler running around, so I needed flexibility with my time. When I stumbled upon this technique, I was instantly intrigued.

With very little effort I was able to acquire all the tools I needed:

  • Clay
  • Pin tool
  • Rolling Pin
  • Sponge

With these 4 tools I created my first mug...that looked like a mug!

I was brand new to ceramics, I made a piece that was functional, and I liked it...I was hooked!

 It’s that easy.

Over the years I have continue improve my skills, refine my aesthetic and with every piece I make I learn something new. Ceramics has a way of keeping you on your toes.

I love handbuilding for its accessibility, but also for the connection to nature it brings. Working so closely with the natural elements is both calming and meditative.

I am at my happiest when my hands are covered in clay...and you can be too!

 See you next week,

 Anna
